Immortals (2011) – The Legend of the Strong and the Beauty of Violence
Immortals, directed by Tarsem Singh, is a unique blend of epic mythology and visual art. Released in 2011, the film quickly made an impression thanks to its epic staging and eye-catching battle scenes.
Simple but Legendary Plot
Immortals is set in ancient Greece, telling the story of the battle between the mortal hero Theseus (Henry Cavill) and the evil tyrant Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). Hyperion wants to use the legendary Epirus Palace to free the Titans and destroy humanity. As the chosen one of Zeus, Theseus must gather strength and courage to confront the dark forces.
Although the plot is quite simple, focusing on a hero’s journey against evil, this simplicity helps the film focus on its strongest points: images and action.
Henry Cavill’s Explosive Role
As Theseus, Henry Cavill has shown an impressive transformation from a commoner to a brave warrior. With a toned body and obvious hard work, Cavill has really convinced the audience in the fighting scenes, especially the bloody battle at the end of the film, when Theseus confronts Hyperion.

Real evidence:
In an interview with Men’s Health magazine, Henry Cavill shared that he had undergone rigorous training for months to achieve a warrior-standard body, including strength training and close combat skills.
Mickey Rourke – The Shadow of Brutality
Mickey Rourke as Hyperion really made an impression with his fierce and cold acting. As a cruel conqueror, Hyperion is willing to kill to achieve his goals. One of the most haunting scenes is when he brutally tortures a prisoner to find out where the Epirus Bow is hidden.
Mickey Rourke shared in an interview with Collider that he drew inspiration from historical tyrants, like Attila the Hun, to create the character of Hyperion. This is evident in his fierce demeanor and haunting determination in every line of dialogue.
Awesomely Beautiful
Director Tarsem Singh is known for his artistic visual style, and Immortals is no exception. From the vast battlefield vistas to the one-on-one battles, every detail is meticulously choreographed.
One of the standout scenes is when the gods on Mount Olympus engage the Titans in a space filled with golden light, contrasting with the blood-soaked ground below.
Film School Rejects praised Immortals for its seamless blend of Caravaggio’s visual style (high-contrast lighting) and the violence of a war film.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Despite its stunning visuals and impressive acting, Immortals is limited in its content. The plot lacks depth and sometimes gets lost in the action scenes. However, this simplicity gives the director space to show off his unique visual talent.
Rise of Heroes
Immortals is a work that is both violent and magnificent, where mortals confront supernatural forces with courage and sacrifice. While not a masterpiece in terms of content, the film still leaves its mark with its distinct aesthetic style and eye-catching battles.
Gods may fall, but heroes always stand!
