Landscapers: A Perfect Love, A Perfect Crime

The Blurry Life Between Real Life and Cinema
Susan (Olivia Colman) and Christopher Edwards (David Thewlis) are a British couple living in Paris. Susan, a film enthusiast, especially obsessed with Gary Cooper, imagines her life as a classic black-and-white film. Despite her difficult real life, she finds joy in collectibles, such as a movie poster she paid for despite not being able to afford it.

Christopher, after several failed interviews due to his lack of French, tries to remain optimistic and protect his “fragile” wife. Despite hiding the truth about the poster purchase, Susan is a devoted wife, encouraging Christopher that things will get better, especially when she receives 100 euros from actor Gérard Depardieu.

The Mystery of the Past
The couple seems to be running away from the past. They are unable to return to England due to the mystery surrounding a murder that took place 15 years ago in Nottingham. Christopher, desperate, writes to his stepmother asking for money and accidentally reveals that they buried Susan’s parents in the backyard of their old house. This leads to a series of investigations when the local police discover the bodies and bullet casings at the scene.

The Unusual Couple and the Strange Arrest

Knowing that there is no way out, Christopher proactively contacts the police and even asks them to buy train tickets to return to England to surrender. The arrest scene at St. Pancras Station is both dramatic and bizarre, as Christopher gently greets the police even though they are pointing guns at him.

Dark Humor and Blurry Reality
The unique thing about Landscapers is the way it blends real-life crime with fantasy cinema. The film smoothly transitions from tense moments to dark humor, creating a space that is both engaging and unpredictable.

Love and Blindness

Olivia Colman and David Thewlis portray a strange but true love. Susan is vulnerable, always looking for comfort in the world of cinema, while Christopher is willing to do everything for his wife, even when he knows he is facing ruin.

Landscapers is a complex story of love, guilt and blindness. The film offers an emotional experience through top-notch acting, a dark but charming setting, and a unique look at the skewed relationship between reality and fantasy.
